Requirements and Responsibilities For Sanitation Department Manager
Manages the operations of a municipal or organizational sanitation department to ensure the reliable and efficient collection and disposal of waste. Directs waste collection, street cleaning, and disposal operations across assigned routes and service areas. Develops and manages department budgets, staffing plans, and equipment resources. Ensures compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations governing waste handling. Oversees supervisors and coordinates scheduling, training, and performance management of department personnel. Establishes operational policies and procedures to improve service quality and efficiency. Responds to community concerns and coordinates service with other departments and agencies. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. Manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. Typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required. Extensive knowledge of the function and department processes.
